# Set Futures position and margin limits

> Set a Futures position target, maximum exposure and margin allocation. Understand reduce-only behavior and what happens at the liquidation buffer.

A Futures bot has separate limits for its position and its use of account equity. Raising one does not automatically raise the other.

![Futures position and margin controls in ANSIO.](https://mintcdn.com/ansio/TbUlSsAFRzZei_af/images/docs/position.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=TbUlSsAFRzZei_af\&q=85\&s=6e25c9f004adab11a40de014d228bbf5)

Position size, target, leverage and margin allocation are separate controls. Demonstration values.

## Position and capital

| Setting | What it controls |
| - | - |
| Max position size | The position limit, measured in tokens. |
| Target position | The position the quoting behavior works toward. |
| Leverage | The leverage setting for the strategy and supported exchange setup. |
| Margin mode | Isolated or Cross, subject to the account's exchange configuration. |
| Margin balance size | Maximum share of account equity committed to positions and open orders. |

Existing exposure counts toward **Margin balance size**. The remainder stays reserved. Reducing exits remain available even when the allocation does not allow new exposure.

Changing an allocation is not a deposit. If the account has insufficient available margin, new orders wait. See [Waiting for margin](https://docs.ansio.trade/troubleshooting/orders.md).

## Reduce-only

**Reduce-only mode** cancels this strategy's orders that would increase exposure and allows orders that reduce it. If the position is long, the remaining strategy orders may all be asks. If it is short, they may all be bids.

An empty side is therefore not necessarily a fault.

## At the liquidation buffer

The **Liquidation buffer** sets the distance used by the risk rule. **At buffer** selects the response:

| Response | Behavior |
| - | - |
| Hold quotes | Pauses new quotes while keeping existing orders. |
| Reduce-only | Cancels exposure-increasing orders and allows reducing orders. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Hold quotes does not cancel resting orders. Auto-reduce on liquidation risk is disabled in the current LIVE interface; do not rely on it to close a position automatically.

Apply changes with **Save & Restart**. Read the current mark, liquidation distance and position after the exchange response. If the intended action is to close the position now, use the separate [Close position flow](https://docs.ansio.trade/futures/flatten.md).
